TRINITY SUNDAY                  June 11, 2017

Year A

First Reading                                                                      Exodus 34:4-9

A reading from the book of Exodus.

Early in the morning,

Moses went up Mount Sinai as the Holy One had commanded,

taking along the two stone tablets he had cut.

The Holy One descended in the cloud and stood there with him,

proclaiming the name, “I AM.”

Then the Holy One passed before Moses and proclaimed,

“I AM God, Your God, compassionate and merciful,

slow to anger, abundant in kindness and faithfulness;

faithful to the thousandth generation, forgiving injustice, rebellion, and sin.”

Immediately, Moses bowed to the ground in worship and said,

“If I have found favor with you, O Holy One,

 then come along in our company. We are indeed a stubborn and stiff-necked people;

but pardon our sin and wickedness and adopt us as your own!”

The word of God recorded in the book of Exodus.

2nd Reading                                                                        2 Corinthians 13:11-14

Meister Eckhart, quoted by H. H. Richards in A Worship Anthology for Advent and Christmas (Bury St. Edmunds: Kevin Mayhew, 1994).

A reading from Paul’s second letter to the Corinthians and

    the writing of Meister Eckhart

Paul writes…

Finally, sisters and brothers, rejoice. Mend your ways.

Encourage one another.  Live in harmony and peace,

and the God of love and peace will be with you.

Greet one another with a holy kiss.

All the holy ones send greetings to you.

The grace of our Savior Jesus Christ and the love of God

and the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all!

Meister Eckhart writes….

Do you want to know what goes on in the heart of the Trinity?
I will tell you.
In the heart of the Trinity the Father laughs and gives birth to the Son.
The Son laughs back at the Father and gives birth to the Spirit.
The whole Trinity laughs and gives birth to us.

When God laughs at the soul and the soul laughs back at God,

the persons of the Trinity are begotten.

When the Father laughs at the Son and the Son laughs back at the Father,

that laughter gives pleasure,
that pleasure gives joy,

that joy gives love,

and that is the Holy Spirit.

Gospel                                                                        John 3:16-18

A reading from the gospel according to John.

Jesus said to his friends,

Yes, God so loved the world,

that whoever believes may not die, but have eternal life.

For God sent the Only Begotten into the world

not to condemn the world,

but that the world might be saved.

Whoever believes in the Only Begotten avoids judgment,

but whoever does not believe is judged already

for not believing in the name of the Only Begotten of God.
