First Reading                      Deuteronomy 8:2-3,14-16

A reading from the book of Deuteronomy.

Moses spoke to the people:

“Remember how for 40 years now the Most High, your God,

has led your journey in the desert,

in order to test you by affliction

and find out whether it was the intention of your heart

       to keep the commandments.

God let you be humbled by hunger, and then fed you with manna,

a food unknown to you and your ancestors,

in order to show that one does not live by bread alone

but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.

“Remember your God,

who brought you out of the land of Egypt,

that place of slavery;

who guided you through the vast and terrible wilderness

with its poisonous serpents and scorpions,

its parched and waterless ground.

Remember your God,

who brought forth water for you from the flinty rock

and fed you in the desert with manna,

a food unknown to your ancestors.”

Second Reading                  1 Corinthians 10:16-17                 Teresa of Avila

A reading from Paul to the Corinthians and the writings of Teresa of Avila

Paul writes:

            Sisters and brothers:

The cup of blessing that we bless,

is it not a participation in the blood of Christ?

And the bread that we break,

is it not a participation in the body of Christ?

Because the loaf of bread is one,

we who are many are one body,

for we all partake of the one loaf.

Teresa writes…

Christ has no body but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours.

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

compassion on this world;

Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good,

Yours are the hands, with which he blesses all the world.

Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,

Yours are the eyes.

YOU ARE HIS BODY.

Christ has no body now but yours,

No hands, no feet on earth but yours,

Yours are the eyes with which he looks

compassion on this world.

Christ has no body now on earth but yours.

Gospel                                   John 6:51-58

A reading from the gospel according to John.

Jesus said to the people gathered:

“I myself am the living bread come down from heaven.

Whoever eats of this bread will live forever;

and the bread I will give for the life of the world,

is my flesh.”

Hearing this they argued among themselves, saying,

“How can he give us his flesh to eat?”

At this Jesus said to them:

“Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh

and drink the blood of the Chosen One,

you have no life in you.

Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life,

and I will raise them up on the last day.

For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink.

Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them.

Just as the living God sent me,

and I live because of Abba God,

so those who feed on me will live because of me.

This is the bread that came down from heaven,

not like what your ancestors ate and died nonetheless.

Those who eat this bread will live forever.”
