Reading I                              Jer. 1: 4-10                                            (Substitution for Jer. 20:10-13)

A reading from the book of the prophet Jeremiah.

The word of Yahweh God came to me, saying,

            “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you,

            and before you were born I consecrated you;

            I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”

I replied;

 “Ah, Yahweh God!  Truly, I do not know how to speak for I am only a youth.”

But God said in reply,

            “Do not say ‘I am only a youth’;

            for you shall go to all to whom I send you,

                        and you shall speak whatever I command you.

            Be not afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you.”

Then Yahweh God stretched forth a hand, touched my mouth, and said to me,

            “Now, I have put my words in your mouth.

            See, I have set you this day over nations and kindoms,

                        to pluck up and to break down,

                        to destroy and to overthrow,

                        to build and to plant.”

Reading II                            Herbert Haag                                  (Substitution for Romans 5:12-15)

A reading from the writings of Herbert Haag.

The doctrine of original sin is not found in any of the writings of the Old Testament.

It is certainly not in Chapters 1-3 of Genesis. . .

The idea that Adam’s descendants are automatically sinners

because of the sin of their ancestor

and that they are already sinners when they enter the world,

is foreign to Holy Scripture.

No one enters the world a sinner.

As the creatures and image of God, one is from one’s first hour

surrounded by God’s parental love. . .

One becomes a sinner only through one’s own individual and responsible action.

Gospel                                   Matthew 10:26-33

            A reading from the gospel according to Matthew.

Jesus sent his disciples out with the following instruction:

“Do not let people intimidate you and fear no one.

Nothing is concealed that will not be revealed,

and nothing is hidden that will not become known.

What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light;

what you hear in whispers, proclaim from the housetops.

“Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul;

rather, fear the one who can destroy both body and soul in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?

Yet not a single sparrow falls to the ground apart from your Abba-God.

Even the hairs of your head are all counted; so do not be afraid of anything.

You are more valuable than a whole flock of sparrows.

Everyone who acknowledges me before others, I will acknowledge before God.

But whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before God.”
